  10. Icon Archiver File Size Statistics:

  12.   The numbers shown are based on two icon collections;
  13. the color collection contains 650 color icons extracted
  14. from various utility programs, the black & white one
  15. contains 3495 b&w icons extracted from the InfoMac V CD.

  31. * Custom Icons Folder:

  33.   The icons are directly shown by the Finder,
  34.   but opening and scrolling the window is very slow.
  35.   Saving a large number of small files to disk makes the
  36.   disk catalog grow (slowing down disk recovery programs)
  37.   and wastes a lot of storage space on larger disks.
  38.   No more than a few hundred icons can be stored in one
  39.   folder, or the Finder stops working properly.

  57.   The icons must be decompressed before they are visible
  58.   (which can take a long while on slower machines),
  59.   and then they have the same problems described above.
  60.   Compressing a single folder containing too many icons gets
  61.   slower and slower (even on a Power Mac) as the number of
  62.   icons increases over a few hundred items.

  74.   The Archiver stores the icon data in a special compressed form
  75.   that allows it to decompress each icon's image on the fly when
  76.   needed; the archive opens very quickly even when it contains a
  77.   very large number of icons, and all icons are immediately visible.
  78.   Note that the compression method is more efficient than StuffIt on
  79.   black & white icons, and nearly as efficient on color ones as well.

  91.   The data format used by the Icon Archiver allows compression
  92.   programs to further compress the database very efficiently.
  93.   This is the best solution for long-term icon storage, although
  94.   a plain Icon Archiver file opens more quickly and doesn't
  95.   require any decompression (which makes it more suitable for
  96.   storage on CD-ROM devices).
